NFL Operation Food Rescue

Operation Food Rescue is a collaborative effort to bring an innovative solution to an old problem in the beautiful city of brotherly love!

Operation Food Rescue announced that its Food Connect app, which reduces food insecurity in Philadelphia by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste, will be the premier food rescue service during the NFL Draft in Philadelphia, April 27-29. The group rescued thousands of pounds of food from NFL Draft vendors, events, and local restaurants, and provided it to those in need.

As a social service agency serving 400 meals a day, the food we receive from Food Connect has been a blessing. Thanks to this app, Sunday Breakfast has received more than 1,300 pounds of salad, sandwiches and beverages to help feed the men and women we serve. We hope more businesses and event planners will take advantage of this service during – and after – the NFL Draft.
~ Julio Arroyo, Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission’s Food Service Director
As 40% of the country’s food goes to waste, and with one in five people in the Philadelphia-area facing hunger, the NFL Draft provides the perfect opportunity to rescue food and put it in the hands of those who need it. Working with the NFL allows us to shine a light on an everyday crisis – food waste – to tackle a much larger challenge: the sustainability of our communities and our planet. It’s a simple effort that can have a huge impact.

The Mayor’s Office of Community Empowerment and Opportunity is proud to participate in Operation Food Rescue — a critical component of the City and its partners’ collaborative efforts to support food insecure Philadelphians. Thanks to Food Connect, the NFL Draft Experience can benefit not only visitors to the event, but also our hungry neighbors in communities across Philadelphia.
