World Food Day

Back to blog

Today, October 16th, we observe World Food Day in honor of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on this date 75 years ago. Since then, countries around the world have been working together to improve agriculture practices and to increase food access to people globally.  While significant strides have been made, there is still so much work to be done. This year, 2020, the theme for World Food Day is “Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together.” This theme resonates with us at Food Connect in that we focus our efforts on nourishing members of our community and improving the sustainability of the food chain.

In 2020 so far, Food Connect, with the help of incredible partners and volunteers, has provided over 600,000 last mile meals to food insecure individuals. We also increased the sustainability of the food chain by saving over 500,000 pounds of food and transporting those critical resources to in-need community organizations.

We do this all together.  It would not be possible for Food Connect to exist without the farmers who grow our food, the grocery stores and restaurants who reach out to us to donate food, our volunteer drivers who help us move the food, and the many shelters, food pantries, churches and other community feeds that help us distribute food to those who need it most.

To join in our food rescue and hunger relief efforts, consider becoming a meal sponsor or volunteering with Food Connect.
